Pete's Story

The 3.5 Amputee: A Magical Journey of Resilience

From a life-threatening medical crisis to recovery, purpose, community, and hope, this is Pete's story of survival and the people who helped him keep moving forward.

The 3.5 Amputee: A Magical Journey of Resilience

The contrast could not have been starker.

In September 2019, Pete was standing on a stage, commanding the room as the Master of Ceremonies for a major corporate recognition evening.

Since joining the company in September 2020, he had found an unexpected dream career supporting the men and women of the United States military.

He wore a sharp "Rat Pack" tuxedo, celebrating his team’s success.

But a single, unassuming detail would alter the course of his life forever: a pair of rented tuxedo shoes that left a minor blister on his ankle.

He treated the blister carefully, wrapped up the corporate event, and spent a couple of days at Disney before returning home.

By the following Wednesday, a wave of flu-like symptoms hit him.

He messaged his team, letting them know he would be starting a little late the next day.

That Wednesday evening, he lay down in his office with his faithful Labrador, Buckshot.

It was the last normal moment he would remember for a very long time.

The Fight for Life

On the morning of September 19, he was rushed to the hospital, incredibly delusional.

The diagnosis was grim: he had fallen into the lethal grip of both septic and toxic shock.

As he slipped into a deep coma, his prognosis was so dire that he was given his last rites.

The chances of survival were slim to none.

While he was asleep, a fierce battle raged for his life.

Approximately 63 days later, on November 7, he opened his eyes.

He woke to the sound of his family discussing their upcoming Thanksgiving plans.

The world had kept moving, but his reality had completely fractured.

He learned that to save his life, doctors had been forced to make devastating interventions.

He would spend just under 500 combined days in the hospital and a rehabilitation center.

During that grueling timeframe, his left hand was amputated, both of his legs were amputated below the knee, and all the tendons tying into his right wrist were removed.

Clinically, he was what doctors referred to as a "3.5 amputee."

Yet, against all odds, he was alive.

Under the brilliant tutelage of Dr. Scalea, the medical team at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center performed a miracle, granting him a second chance at existence.

Learning to Live Again

Survival was only the first step; reconstruction was the next.

The thousands of hours that followed were defined by agonizing, meticulous effort.

He had to relearn the simplest human tasks: feeding himself, writing his name, and standing up to start the list.

He wasn't alone in the fight.

The genius team at Dankmeyer Prosthetics engineered the legs that would allow him to walk again.

Emily, a specialist  at Open Bionics provided him with a cutting-edge prosthetic hand, restoring a piece of his independence.

Beyond the technology, it was human spirit that fueled his recovery.

The unwavering love of his family and friends kept him moving forward on the darkest days.

He also found strength in unexpected places.

During his rehabilitation, he received an incredibly powerful, inspirational video message from Baltimore Ravens and NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis—a jolt of motivation that helped push him through the grueling physical therapy.

A New Purpose

Today, he has turned his survival into a mission.

He channels his energy into finding happiness in the things he loves: everything Disney, cheering on the Baltimore Orioles at the ballpark, and rooting for the Ravens.

More importantly, he has dedicated his life to helping others navigate the kind of darkness he survived.

He spends his time working directly with other amputees, offering them mentorship, insight, and a living map of what is possible.

He has also built a thriving YouTube channel and community, fostering an online space dedicated entirely to positivity, hope, and happiness.

Pete dedicates tireless hours to supporting his 501(c)(3) partner charity, Semper Fi & America’s Fund, working fiercely to raise vital funds for wounded and disabled service members.

His deep commitment is a living tribute to his late mentor, Francis James Hogan —a dedicated Marine who passed away in 2024.

Through this mission, Pete ensures that Frank’s legacy of service, honor, and brotherhood continues to impact and uplift veterans.

His journey, once marked by a sudden tragedy, has truly become a magical one—defined not by what he lost, but by the extraordinary depth of what he found.
