Climb aboard one of 90 wood-carved ornate horses—or one intricately carved chariot—at this classic attraction inspired by Disney’s Cinderella. Bedecked in golden helmets, decorative shields and flowing flower garlands and feathers, each beautiful horse is unique.

Prince Charming Regal Carrousel was built in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Co. The attraction began life as the Liberty Carrousel at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. It’s been delighting Guests at Walt Disney World Resort since 1971.

There is something unique about the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel ride in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World — and it’s not that the name contains an extra “r.”

The carousel is a mainstay at Magic Kingdom, where it has remained a guest favorite since it was introduced to the park in 1971.

But the ride dates back much further.

Built in 1917 by The Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the ride was originally called the Liberty Carrousel and first called Detroit’s Belle Isle Park home.

The handmade carousel features 90 wood-carved ornate horses, or carved chariots.

Each of the hand-painted horses are unique.

After being rediscovered in 1967 at Olympic Park in New Jersey, the carousel was acquired by Disney Imagineers, who renovated the ride before introducing it to Walt Disney World.

A carousel, also known as a merry-go-round, was the inspiration for Disneyland park in California. Walt Disney came up with the idea for his first theme park after watching his daughters ride the carousel at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

The King Arthur Carrousel in Fantasyland at Disneyland was featured in the telecast for the park’s opening day celebration in 1955. Like the one in Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom, the King Arthur Carrousel was purchased, refurbished and moved to the park.

When moved to Magic Kingdom from New Jersey in 1971, the carousel was originally called Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel, before taking its current name on June 1, 2010.

The backstory behind the name change was that after Cinderella and Prince Charming were married, they took residence in Cinderella’s Castle. With peace in the kingdom, Prince Charming had time to practice for jousting tournaments, so he built a training device to practice the art of ring-spearing.

When the villagers became in awe of the training device, Prince Charming had another one built (this one a carousel) so the entire kingdom could spin and enjoy the invention.

While simple compared to more advanced attractions, the history of the classic carousel at Magic Kingdom makes it a must-see for many park guests.

Above the horses of the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel is 18 hand-painted vignettes from Disney’s “Cinderella” on the inner rounding board.

At night, the ride takes on a breathtaking view when the carousel’s 2,300 lights shine in the foreground of the front of Cinderella’s castle.
